Anyone who has known me since I moved to Ann Arbor in 1955 and attended Eberwhite, Slauson Jr. High, and eventually, A2 Pioneer High School, knows me as a free spirit. I have owned motor vehicles, flown private aircraft, and sailed on small sailboats on lakes Michigan, and Huron, to a U.S. Navy "tin can" (destroyer) U.S.S. Ingersoll DD652 all along the California coast to Seattle past Hawaii, Guam, Midway, Okinawa, Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, to the Mekong Delta, and up the Saigon River in Viet Nam.
Ever since our buddy Bob Seger and other Slauson classmates rode on my Vespa scooter, I’ve bought and sold used cars as a hobby in high school. That paid for my Bermuda trip, missing the graduation ceremonies in "63. A 4 year U.S. Navy enlistment from Great Lakes to Davisville, R.I. on a radar picket ship U.S.S. Investigator AAGR9 on the Atlantic Ocean, to et "a" school and Great Lakes, Il., Then on to San Diego aboard the 'tin can' in'65, and on to the Tonkin Gulf, etc. I G.I. Billed my Eastern Michigan University till my mom passed on and I went to Iowa City, Iowa with my '66 Corvair (which I still have ) towing my '68 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. I got married, fathered Todd, (now in U.S.M.C.). Worked as an apartment manager while employed at VW, then Dodge, finally as a service Manager at Chrysler dealerships. Owned a 65 and 67 VW, and also a ’72 charger, and sold them and the motorcycle and moved back to A2. Got a '71 Porsche 914, '67 Jaguar XKE, '72 240Z, '74 260 Z Datsun which most likely cost me my first marriage to Joyce.
Still the free spirit, moved to Tucson, Arizona in '75 and have been here ever since. I remarried in '77 to Sherry Swanson, built a new house in the foothills, worked for First National Bank of Arizona, Continental Airlines, got a P.I. License , visited England, Hawaii, and New Zealand, up to age 43. In 2004, the agent orange I contracted while on the Saigon River started acting up on me. The bone cancer cost me my hip joints among other problems. I'm now driving a wheelchair (with a'76 Corvette and a ,66 Corvair in the garage, Mazda pickup and '09 Scion XB in the driveway.
I'm not complaining, I’ve had a good life, a good wife ( for 33 years), realized most of my ambitions, I’m a cancer survivor, Viet Nam combat survivor, flown solo, traveled well, yes, "been there, done that". You'll notice my email address of < diecastmodel10@gmail.Com> that's my new hobby now that I’m retired, I collect scale model die cast & plastic 1:18 to 1:64 scale vehicles. Mostly the vehicles I’ve owned, driven, flown, or sailed since '53, including large scale Corvettes made from '53 to today.
