WASHINGTON CLUB PHOTO MICHIGAN THEATER PHOTOSWhat did you do right after we graduated?
I attended Wellesley College, graduating in 1967 with a degree in
Political Science. While in college I was a summer intern in the US
Senate, office of Sen. Howard Cannon of Nevada, and worked there
after I graduated from college as well. (Yes, I did know Cokie Roberts,
Diane Sawyer, and Hillary Clinton, all of whom were at Wellesley with
me, so you don't need to ask!) Went back to school later and earned a
Masters from Stanford and have an "ABD" (all but dissertation) toward
my PhD, also from Stanford (dropped out because as a single Mom I
needed a job which actually paid real money).
What has been your occupation(s) over the past 50 years? Tell us
about any highlights or cool things that you’ve been a part of.
When I was young and people asked me what I wanted to be when I
grew up, I always answered "everything!" And I actually have done as
much of "everything" as I could. Here's the short list: worked in US
Senate; taught high school as well as at Stanford University; started a
high school that became one of the first charter high schools in
California; was Director of Marketing for an educational publisher; was
a high level manager at Apple Computer (8+ years) and Sun
Microsystems (3 years), consulted with both startups and established
high tech firms; was Director of a major art gallery in Santa Fe; and
was head of Senior Services for Santa Fe County, NM.
Where have you lived, and where do you live now?
I now live in Reno, NV, having moved here 18 months ago from Santa
Fe, NM. In addition, I have also lived in Washington, DC; Cambridge,
MA; Camp LeJeune, NC (1st husband stationed there); Moraga and
Palo Alto, CA; and Boulder, CO. I love living in Reno -- it's beautiful,
climate is great, Lake Tahoe is very near, and people are very friendly.
I have worked in England, France, Germany, and Japan, and traveled
to Kenya, New Guinea, Australia, the Dominican Republic, and Costa
Rica. I have also visited every one of the 50 states at least once.
Needless to say, I love to travel and experience new places.
Are you retired? If so, what are you doing in retirement?
Not retired -- I'm looking for my next job adventure. (One of the costs
of not having a single career is not having a pension.) I am active in
non-paid activities, including the arts, public education reform, senior/
elder issues, and women's issues (especially in empowering young
women to expand their horizons). I am also working with a volunteer
group, teaching job search and presentation skills to people who have
recently lost their jobs. Since my sons and their families both live on the
East Coast (Boston and New York), I travel there as much as I can.
Please tell us about your family, spouse/s, children,
grandchildren, etc.
Married in 1967 right out of Wellesley and divorced in 1978. Have two
great sons from that marriage: David (undergrad Dartmouth, grad
school Harvard) who teaches middle & high school at a charter school
in inner city Boston, and Michael (undergrad Middlebury) who is a VP
at Spotify. Both sons are married to wonderful women named "Lynn". I
have 4 grandchildren: Tom, 11 and Maggie, 8 (Dave's kids), and
Dusty, 5 and Hazel,3 (Mike's kids). Best of all, I am married to my soul-
mate, Robert Barnes. We got together in 1986, and lived together until
2002 when we finally decided to get married. He brings light into my life
every day.
What interests/activities do you find most satisfying?
One of the threads that connects all I have done, both professionally
and personally, is working closely with people to help them learn new
things. Another is working to resolve complex business and social
problems in inventive, creative and sustainable ways. Both of these
bring me great satisfaction. My family, especially my grandchildren, is
also a source of joy. Even though we do not live close to them, we use
technology (FaceTime, Skype, texting, and of course phone calls) to
stay close. It's not the same as being with them, but it helps!
Did you have experiences in High School that influenced later
choices in your life?
I feel very blessed to have received such a strong, comprehensive
education at AAHS. My time in high school laid the foundation for my
life-long love of learning and fostered a curiosity about the world at
large which has guided many of my life choices.
Do you have any memories from High School that you would like
to share?
Senior year, a group of us decided to play "kids" games outside at
lunch (jacks, hopscotch, etc), and we got into trouble the the assistant
principal who accused us of gambling!
Marching band rehearsals at the crack of dawn - holding our leg up
while our band director would lecture us! The fun of playing the shows
on the football field at half-time. Great years!
What else would you like us to know about?
My mother loved my HS graduation picture, but I didn't. I never felt it
showed the "real me", so if you don't recognize me, that's why.
