Grand Valley State College (now GVSU) is where I spent my freshman
year, it was a great year educationally. My Dad, Jack, was always quick
to announce that my attendance there was the first year it opened,
1963, right up until he died March 30th at the age of 98. I was the first
in my family to go to college. I stayed out the next year and worked at
Crowleys Dept Store downtown Detroit. That job as a salesperson
helped me overcome severe shyness. Just after I decided to become a
teacher and enroll at EMU, Crowleys offered me a position as a buyer.
To this day I am proud of that accomplishment.
What has been your occupation(s) over the past 50 years? Tell us
about any highlights or cool things that you’ve been a part of.
For 37 years I have been an educator. I have been a resource room
teacher, teacher consultant, 3rd and 4th grade teacher, and classroom
teacher for the emotionally impaired.
In addition, I have been a teacher at the Washtenaw Juvenile detention
Center School where I have taught social studies, American history and
government for twenty-five of the past thirty-seven years. It was
originally located on Platt Road; we are now located on Washtenaw
Avenue. Our students are 6-12th graders. Teaching there has became
a mission to me.
My most treasured occupation has been that of mother.
Where have you lived, and where do you live now?
Michigan and Ohio, I now live in Jackson, Michigan.
Are you retired? If so, what are you doing in retirement?
Not yet!
Please tell us about your family, spouse/s, children,
grandchildren, etc.
Mark is my son, he is 36. He attended Jackson High School, (our
football rivals in the1960s), and he graduated with honors.. My
marriage ended after 12 years, when Mark was two. Mark played
varsity football and was co-captain, he also played varsity baseball and
was voted MVP by his team mates.
He graduated from UM dental school having been admitted after only 3
years of undergraduate school. From there he went to LA to attend
USC (Universitry of Southern California) for their three year
orthodontics program. He is an orthodontist in California. Can you tell I
am a proud mother?
What interests/activities do you find most satisfying?
In addition to theater I love to travel. I have been to London,
Jerusalem, Rio, Venice, Florence, Paris, Rome, several cities in
Mexico, New York City and many times to Stratford Ontario.
I also love the Jackson Symphony, movies, and other music and
camping. I love to watch golf, tennis, Tigers baseball and some
football. Due to a torn ACL I had to give up tennis, a dear love. Another
dear love is my dog Tova, she is a ten year old Jack Russell mix.
Did you have experiences in High School that influenced later
choices in your life?
Mr Roland Schwab, my biology teacher, and Mr. Rogers, my American
History teacher, have had a great influence on my life. In fact, I took
the job as a Social Studies/History teacher at my present job of 25
years because of the love of these subjects he brought out in me.
Mr Schwab contributed ideas of thinking, philosophy and problem
solving I still enjoy today.
Also at AA High I was given the opportunity to attend professional
theater (plays) performed by a traveling acting company at the
auditorium of the old AA High School (State and Huron). It was an
exhilarating experience priming a lifetime love of the theater.
Do you have any memories from High School that you would like
to share?
My memories are of kind and caring people at AA High School.
What else would you like us to know about?
Very much I look forward to reuniting at our reunion.
