WASHINGTON CLUB PHOTO MICHIGAN THEATER PHOTOSWhat did you do right after we graduated?
That fall I enrolled at U-M, majoring in what-the-hell-do-I-do now?
Ended up taking lots of classes in journalism and somehow came out
with a BA in '67. Started law school in California in 1968 and during my
first year received an invitation from the Peace Corps and an order from
the US Army during the same week. My fiancee Peggy and I decided to
accept the invitation (knowing that after two years I still could be
drafted). So, off we went to the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific,
a place that looked like paradise but had the highest attrition rate of any
Peace Corps program.
What has been your occupation(s) over the past 50 years? Tell us
about any highlights or cool things that you’ve been a part of.
After two years in Tonga where Peggy taught elementary school and I
taught middle school and started a Kindergarten, we traveled the rest of
the way around the world for six months and ended up back in Ann
Arbor for a short time. Then moved to Denver where I had a job waiting
doing PR and recruiting for Peace Corps/VISTA. Peggy got her master's
and began teaching in an elementary school. 18 months of recruiting
(and lots of traveling) was enough for me and I applied for a job at
KVOD, a local radio station. Worked there for the next 12 years as an
announcer/writer/salesman/manager. Left the radio station and worked
in PR and marketing and started my own company. In 2004 was invited
to join Colorado Public Radio as an announcer/writer/manager. That's
where I am now.
Where have you lived, and where do you live now?
After leaving Ann Arbor following graduation from U-M, lived for a year
in California, then off to a couple of tiny islands in the Kingdom of
Tonga, where Peggy and I worked as teachers in the Peace Corps.
Moved to Denver after that and have been here for 41 years. If you
know Denver, I've been in Washington Park, Congress Park and now
Park Hill (I just like the older parts of town). Current home is a 1908
house that I remodeled.
Are you retired? If so, what are you doing in retirement?
Not retired. Still working at Colorado Public Radio as the director of
community programs. But find time for tennis, cycling and traveling. Just
returned from a bike/barge trip in southern France that was really great.
Please tell us about your family, spouse/s, children,
grandchildren, etc.
Married Peggy Granger in December, 1968. We were married until her
death in 2006 and have two wonderful sons. Benjamin is 34, went to
Rhode Island School of Design and married lovely Lauren a year ago,
and is making his living as an artist (watercolors) in New York. David,
writer/actor/musician is 32. He finally had his fill of auditions and life on
stage, and is now finishing a 3 year program in Berkeley in acupuncture
and will be licensed early next year. No grandkids yet, despite repeated
hints on my part.
What interests/activities do you find most satisfying?
I love working in radio, so feel very lucky to have the job I have. Still
have a blast playing tennis whenever I can. Am fortunate to have a
woman in my life, Becky, who likes many of the things I do, so we go to
lots of concerts, plays, movies, ride bikes and travel as much as
possible.
Did you have experiences in High School that influenced later
choices in your life?
Some of my fondest memories were of Mr. Terpstra's English class,
playing music in the orchestra with Mr. Massman conducting and being
on the tennis team, coached by Scotty Wilson and Ed Klum. I'm still
involved in writing for radio, music and tennis, so I guess what I did then
very much influenced what I do now.
Do you have any memories from High School that you would like
to share?
I'll save those for next July
What else would you like us to know about?
I think there's more here already than anyone cares to read.
Steve and Becky in NYC!
